Lawrence, KS - Form Based Code

A week long charrette in the city of Lawrence, Kansas resulted in a new code which will provide for quality growth and protect the character of the city. One resident commented, "I think from the responses I've seen that people are warming to it. Before the charrette there was undue negative response. A lot of people don't get involved until they are mad. There's been some really promising dialogue."

Gentilly Charrette: New Orleans, LA - Website No Longer Available
The Gentilly community of New Orleans hels a week long charrette in April 2006 to plan for post Hurricane Katrina rebuilding. A large multi-disciplinary design team gathered input from community residents and offered action steps and plans for the redevelopment of the area.

Central Mount Pleasant Charrette - Mount Pleasant, SC

Keane & Co. along with CharretteCenter Town Design developed a master plan for a new town center. The McAlister Development Company wants to change that. McAlister owns a 160 acre site only a block from Highway 17 and I-526. A part of one of the town's primary streets - Hungryneck Boulevard - will be built through the site.

Central Avenue Corridor Planning Project; Prince George's County, MD - Website No Longer Available
A public design charrette was held by the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) Prince George’s County Planning Department to develop an overall planning strategy for the Central Avenue Corridor. The charrette began November 5, 2005. A Post-charrette Presentation will be held on January 6, 2006.

Urban Design Centers

The design of urban space makes the difference between a vibrant Main Street and a dead strip mall, and cities are finding that the cost of even a small staff devoted to the design of the public realm will have an exponentially profound effect on the success of land planning and economic development. This has lead to a rise in the number of Design Centers which work in cooperation with city planning offices and economic development corporations, often developed as a sub-office of the latter.

Squamish is the second Smart Growth on the Ground partner community. Sustainable development concepts will be applied in a community facing tremendous development pressures, particularly as the eyes of the world turn in this direction as a result of the 2010 Olympics. Major events in Squamish began in Fall 2004 and will continue through 2005.
